Apiary

Our fourth and fifth grade science students are buzzing with excitement, and so is the Potomac School apiary! Last week, we received our first hive, and the bees are already out foraging for nectar and pollen, working to store enough honey to survive next winter. Meanwhile, our students are learning the basics of beekeeping and discussing how we can help these amazing pollinators stay alive despite the many challenges they face in today's world.

Gardening in Spanish

Sixth grade Spanish students recently worked with Environmental Studies Coordinator Albert Pingree and Sustainability Project Manager Sean Conroy in the campus gardens. They learned which plants are ingredients in popular Hispanic foods and researched the origins of some of those ingredients, like tomatoes, chocolate, corn, and potatoes. They also studied these foods’ roles in Mesoamerican civilizations; for example, in Mayan culture, cocoa beans were once used as currency. Finally, the students spent time weeding (sacando monte), planting (sembrando), and watering (regando).
