Course Description: In this class, students will be introduced to the Spanish language through participation in conversation, games, and songs. They will learn the alphabet (vowels and consonants), and some basic vocabulary related to greetings, colors, numbers, food, and pets. They will also begin to develop an “ear” for the spoken language, including tones, accents, and rhythms. The objective is to make the student’s initial exposure to Spanish a relaxed, enjoyable, and enriching experience.

Course Description: Let’s sell lemonade! Join this fun class that empowers students with an entrepreneurial mindset. Students learn to earn money by selling yummy lemonade! Learning is centered around marketing, finance and strategy fostering teamwork. From designing marketing flyers to estimating profits to experimenting with recipes, young students will have fun while engaging in enriching activities with a lasting developmental impact. Students work in teams and donate profits to a charity when they launch their lemonade stand in spring!.

Course Description: In this class, students will engage in different challenges to build their robotics skills. Whether new to robotics or fresh off a successful VEX season, this course will help students develop and refine coding, driving, and building skills within collaborative challenges. Then, on May 2 when VEX announces the 2023-2024 challenge, students will begin to brainstorm and design a bot for next year’s competition. This class is a fantastic way to learn and develop skill.

Course Description: Let’s have some FUN while learning different chess strategies. Class time is divided between lessons and practice games. Lessons will range from basic rules to advanced tournament strategies. Students will have the opportunity to play in tournaments (in-person and online) outside of the club time. In-person tournaments are at an additional cost. The group will have an opportunity to participate in weekly practice tournaments and an event with world champion Magnus Carlsen or Judit Polgar, the best female chess player of all time.  All skill levels are welcome.

Course Description: This class will give students the practical skills of building a clear argument and communicating that argument effectively. The content-based skills will focus on logical flow and providing evidence for their claims. The delivery-based skills are eye contact and projection. In 5^th grade Speech Squad will work with the instructor, Kayla Williamson, to put these skills into practice so they have a solid foundation of confidence in their speaking

Course Description: Come and enjoy the great outdoors while exploring our beautiful 90 acre campus with a Middle School science teacher, Stephen Wolfe! Students will participate in activities such as catching tadpoles and crayfish in the pond, building a fire at the Morton fire deck, and going on scavenger hunts while looking for signs of spring. Students will also learn the basics of beekeeping and the colonies of the Potomac School’s beehives. (Beekeeping will be “challenge by choice,” and protective gear will be worn).

Course Description: The IS Spring Robotics offering, is now entitled Mix VEX.  We feel that this class offers something for everyone, whether you are interested in VEX IQ or VEX VRC (metal robots). All students will start with VEX EXP kits, an introductory metal bot. Then, once the new 2023-2034 VEX challenges are announced in early May, students can begin to set their own path forward in the design process, choosing to design and build with VEX IQ parts or VEX VRC.
