elcome!

As president of the Alumni Governing Council (AGC), I know that alumni are an integral part of any educational institution and their involvement is the result of and contributes to the overall success of a school. Potomac’s long-held traditions and lasting friendships are the cornerstones of our unique, shared experience. The AGC works to keep you connected and ensure a welcoming environment for lifelong alumni engagement.

The AGC was established in 1990 by Trustee Emeritus and past parent Keith Ausbrook '73, with the help of Trustee Emeritus and past parent Janet Trowbridge Bohlen ’43 and past parent and past faculty member Sally Hand Herren ’54. Representing Potomac’s largest constituency, the AGC’s mission is to increase the global reach of the alumni network through events and programs both on and off-campus.

Over the years, the AGC has grown and evolved to adapt to Potomac’s needs and, at the same time, has worked to preserve key aspects of the school’s traditions and values. The AGC has been instrumental in cultivating relationships with alumni beyond Reunion. Alumni are encouraged to return to campus for Homecoming, Fall Frolics, Alumni Fall Games, Winter Lights, May Day, and other events. In recent years, the AGC has offered networking and mentoring opportunities to connect our alumni with current students. Over the past six years, the AGC has hosted the Upper School Career Day program with over 160 alums from all over the country coming back to campus to speak to juniors and seniors. The participating alumni are honored to return to school, and feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, making Career Day an event they look forward to every year.

Last year, the Women’s Network program was launched, and we are excited to continue building the program this year. Furthermore, alumni outreach efforts have been bolstered by events hosted around the country from New York, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia to Austin, Denver, LA, and San Francisco. Once travel resumes, we look forward to gathering again in your city! The alumni community has truly become a vibrant and active force at The Potomac School.

Today, the AGC is a thriving group that continued to expand their role for the school and introduce new initiatives. In support of Potomac’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiative, members of the AGC played an integral part this summer to facilitate alumni feedback and communication with school leadership. The AGC will work with the alumni community to  support the launch of affinity and alliance groups.

Finally, I want to take a moment to thank you all for your continued support of the Potomac Fund. Your generous gifts help cover the difference between tuition and the actual cost of a Potomac education; augment faculty salaries and benefits, financial aid programs, and curriculum development; and reflect your thanks, appreciation of, and confidence in our faculty and staff for all that they do to enrich the lives of Potomac students.

The AGC supports a thriving, active community of alumni volunteers, who work hard to invigorate and connect alumni to each other and the school. We are here to listen to and serve the alumni community. If you have ideas or are interested in serving, please contact me or the Director of Alumni Relations Laura Miller.

Sincerely,
Rory Byrnes '01, President Alumni Governing Council
