How to Apply

The Potomac School is one of the many DC area independent schools that has partnered with Ravenna for the submission of inquiries and applications to manage the entire application process. Through Ravenna, you will be able to register for Admission events (Tours, Information Sessions), submit your online application, electronically request teacher recommendations, track your application progress, and view the decision notification. 

Please note, Potomac does not issue the I-20, which is the necessary paperwork for a student Visa.

2025-26 Campus Tour for Lower School

Kindergarten–Grade 3

(Please note: Kindergarten applicants must be five-years-old by September 1 of their kindergarten year.)

• Tours are offered for adults only between mid-September and mid-January; we recommend that you schedule a visit through Ravenna as soon as possible.

Information Sessions

Kindergarten–Grade 3

• We will offer in person and virtual Lower School Information Sessions this fall. The information session is an opportunity to learn more about the Lower School from faculty and administrators. Please register through Ravenna.

Virtual Parent Meeting

Kindergarten, Grade 1

• Virtual parent meeting on Zoom last one-half hour.

Assessment/Visit Information

Kindergarten, Grade 1

• Once you have completed the application, you will select an in-person group visit date for your kindergarten and grade 1 applicant. Group visits take place on Saturday mornings in December and January.

Teacher Recommendations

• Kindergarten-Grade 3: current teacher (required)
• Optional Recommendation Form (K-12): May be sent to an additional individual familiar with the applicant. For example, an athletic coach, religious or scout leader, or an art or music teacher

Transcript Information

• Kindergarten: Submit a teacher narrative or progress summary.
• Grades 1-3: If available, a transcript from your child’s current school or a progress summary

Applicants Living out of the Area

• Families and applicants from overseas or outside the area are not required to come to the campus. For Kindergarten and Grade 1, please schedule a virtual parent interview once you have completed the application in the Ravenna portal.

2025-26 Campus Tour for Middle School

Grades 4 - 6

• Tours are offered between mid-September and mid-January; we recommend that you schedule a visit through Ravenna as soon as possible.

Information Session

Grades 4 - 6

• We will offer a Middle School Information Sessions on Thursday, December 11, 2025. The information session is an opportunity to learn more about the Middle School from faculty and administrators. Please register through Ravenna.

Parent Meeting

Grades 4 and 6

• Parent meeting lasting one half hour.

Saturday Group Campus Visit/Assessment

Grades 4 and 6

• Once you have completed the application, you will select a group visit date for your fourth or sixth grade applicant.

Teacher Recommendations

• Grades 4-6: current teacher (required)
• Optional Recommendation Form (K-12): May be sent to an additional individual familiar with the applicant. For example, an athletic coach, religious or scout leader, or an art or music teacher

• Grades 4-6: A transcript from your child’s current school is required.

• Families and applicants from overseas or outside the area are not required to come to the campus. Please contact our office to schedule a virtual interview once you have completed the application in the Ravenna portal.

Grades 7–8

• Schedule an in-person tour through Ravenna. This will be an hour-long group tour (up to 3 families) of the Intermediate School with an admission officer.

Information Session

Grades 7 - 8

• We will offer an Intermediate School Information Session on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. The Information Session is an opportunity to learn more about the Intermediate School from faculty and administrators. Please register through Ravenna.

Student Interview/Assessment Information

• Applicants to Grade 7 will complete an in-person visit on a Saturday in December or January. These visits will include an assessment and interview.

• Applicants to Grade 8 are required to have an interview, which can be scheduled through Ravenna. No standardized testing is required; however students may submit results from a SSAT or ISEE.

• All visits and interviews can be scheduled through Ravenna

• We will offer two Upper School Information sessions on Wednesday, October 22, and Thursday, November 13, 2025. The Information Session is an opportunity to learn more about the Upper School from faculty and administrators. Please register through Ravenna.

Student Interview

Grades 9-11

• An interview for each applicant is required. Please schedule an interview through Ravenna.

Assessment Information

Grades 9–11

• Students may submit the results of their SSAT or ISEE standardized tests or take an internal assessment at Potomac. The PSAT or SAT is also accepted for applicants to grades 10 and 11
