Advisory Program

Potomac’s Upper School advisory program plays an essential role in creating a community where every student feels affirmed, respected, and known.

Our advisory program engages a network of caring adults and students who nurture productive, honest, and enduring relationships and build a culture of mutual support and cooperation within each advisory group. Through the themes of Wellness, Relationships, Digital Citizenship, and Academic Habits, advisory reinforces the School’s mission of fostering each student’s intellectual growth, love of learning, and strength of character.

The advisor serves as the primary bridge between home and school. Students, parents, and advisors partner to build relationships based on communication, compassion, and trust, ultimately supporting each student’s autonomy and well-being.

The advisory selection process begins during the summer before grade 9. In consultation with a team of advisors, the Academic Dean assigns each ninth grade student to an advisor and advisory group. A typical grade 9 advisory group includes one advisor and six to seven advisees.

STEPS: STRENGTHENING ENGAGEMENT AT THE POTOMAC SCHOOL

At Potomac we want to ensure that every student is fully engaged in all aspects of School life. Our STEPS program supplements the advisory program and provides support and guidance through faculty and peer mentors for any student who might need extra help academically, socially or emotionally. 

Our standard of excellence involves developing the whole child. Academic achievement is a required standard for a Potomac student, but other indicators of excellence are just as important and include self-confidence, a sense of pride and responsibility, and invested membership in our community. These attributes are the goal of a Potomac education and are the measures of excellence for an individual’s life.

How does the STEPS program work?

  • The STEPS Committee identifies students who might benefit from the program.
  • Students are invited to participate.
  • Faculty members, in partnership with the STEPS Committee, work with participating students
  • Student Ambassadors assist students new to Potomac’s Upper School, helping them meet other students, including them in school events and making sure they are fully engaged in school life.
