Middle School Learning Support
At The Potomac School, Language Arts and Math Specialists play a crucial role in providing targeted support for students. By collaborating closely with classroom teachers, they can effectively identify areas where students may need extra help or enrichment. The use of small, flexible groups allows for tailored instruction that can address specific academic needs as well as executive functioning and study skills. This approach not only helps students improve in specific content areas but also supports their overall learning strategies and success in school.
For students requiring additional support, the Middle School Student Support Team (MSST) convenes to discuss how to accommodate the child's needs throughout the year. The school offers a limited number of accommodations for students with documented learning differences. To access these accommodations, students must provide a recent psycho-educational or neuropsychological report, which is required for both school-based and standardized testing accommodations. The Director of Learning Support, K-6, will review the reports and, along with the other learning specialists, develop an Individual Academic Plan (IAP) that includes accommodations within the general curricular setting ensuring that all students have equitable access to education, promoting inclusivity and helping each student succeed according to their unique learning profile.
