Chinese Class Students Engage in Cultural Exchange
This week, Upper School Chinese IV students, under the guidance of Ms. Carol Jia and Ms. Joy Webster, visited elderly Chinese residents at Hunters Wood Fellowship Building. This experience unfolded as a tapestry of cultural exchange, generational bonding, and profound service learning. The students savored authentic Chinese dishes prepared by the residents, recited classical poetry for them, and actively participated in learning Tai Chi. Beyond cultural preservation, the day emerged as a dynamic canvas of understanding – blending respect, compassion, and shared learning. Our students thoughtfully presented Potomac gifts and heartfelt cards as tangible expressions of gratitude and unity. This event created connections that resonated across generations and cultures.

Last week, the SERC Class of 2025 presented their research findings during the annual SERC assembly. The science on display was phenomenal, as was the ability of the students to distill complex processes down to essential knowledge. Upper School students and faculty learned about drones and forensic science; AI and convoluted neural networks, nanoparticles and material science, genetic variants and agricultural yields, and more. The SERC seniors took the audience on their journey through the program, from learning about their respective scientific fields to the bonds they formed over the last three years. Thank you, Seniors, for your remarkable commitment to the SERC program and each other.
Over last weekend, members of the Upper School Band traveled to Philadelphia for a trip packed with music, history, and unforgettable moments. Students had the opportunity to work with Dr. Patricia Cornett, a leading collegiate conductor from Temple University, in a dynamic and inspiring master class. The group explored the city’s historic roots with a visit to Independence Hall, ran up the famous “Rocky steps” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and sampled everything at Reading Terminal Market. They also took in a high-energy performance of & Juliet. The highlight of the trip was a jaw-dropping concert by the Philadelphia Orchestra, which performed Stravinsky’s The Firebird —an experience that left students absolutely mesmerized.
The Upper School Ensemble Theatre class took the runway prior to Spring Break for their annual Recycled Materials Costume Design show! Students in Mrs. Fisher-Phillips's Ensemble Theatre class have been studying costume design and construction. After weeks of designing and crafting, they ended their unit with a full-fledged runway show. Well done, designers and models! Enjoy photos here.
On Tuesday, 28 Upper School students from honors art history, Visual and Performing Arts Concentration (VPAC), and a painting class spent the whole day visiting the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. They studied the works of old masters and new masters while comparing notes in an unhurried way with their peers and teachers.
Our Chinese 2 students, currently studying the shopping unit, took their learning beyond the classroom with a field trip to 99 Ranch in Fairfax City. Through a scavenger hunt, they practiced essential Chinese phrases like asking for prices and recognizing discounts while exploring the unique differences between Asian and American grocery stores—especially in the seafood, produce, and snack sections.
To further enhance their language skills, students ordered food in Chinese at the food court and enjoyed a well-earned treat—milk tea for dessert! This hands-on experience allowed them to engage with real-world language and cultural diversity, making their learning truly come to life.
On Tuesday, the Hispanic Student Alliance brought Langstaff Auditorium to life with their annual assembly. Presentations focused on the food, language, pop culture, and traditions across Latin America. The assembly culminated in a live telenovela, staged by members of the Hispanic Student Alliance and some enthusiastic audience volunteers. After the assembly, to celebrate their accomplishment, members of the affinity group enjoyed a catered lunch from a local Latin American restaurant. We are thankful for the HSA's efforts to share a rich culture with our community!
