Grade 4 spent time working on building routines in math, which include how to be a good math partner and have a growth mindset when faced with challenges. The students utilized fun games like multiplication bump, tangrams, and pentominoes puzzles, algebra bubbles (aka magic bubbles), and an online IXL diagnostic resource tool to help with the learning.   

Sixth graders brought the Middle Ages to Potomac with the annual Living History Showcase. The students researched the medieval era before deciding on roles they wanted to represent. The showcase featured bakers, merchants, knights, craftspeople, and even plague victims! The students worked collaboratively to develop skits and presentations demonstrating all they had learned about this fascinating period. Great job, sixth grade! Enjoy a photo gallery from the event.

This week, three of our sixth grade classes spent a day boating on the Potomac River. While the weather was mixed – one sunny day and two not-so-much – the students had a great day on the water. Mrs. Fields' class will head out for the final trip next Tuesday after we return from a long weekend. The students examined water quality with an emphasis on abiotic factors that affect the watershed and used nets to capture fish to learn about the various species living here. View a gallery!

Last Friday, fifth graders in decorated chitons performed a traditional Greek dance at the Greek Assembly. Then they headed to the Turf field to show their athletic abilities – leaping over poles, hoisting the shot put into the air, running like the wind, and cheering on their friends. All that fun was followed by a wonderful Greek lunch catered by Meriwether Godsey. It was a glorious day! We hope your students came home with many exciting stories to share. On Friday, April 19, Adam McNeil's grade 5 class joined Jeremy Metz' grade 10 English class (G block), along with Brandon Mayrhofer ’27 and Trevor Nelson ’27 for a morning of campus beautification and a tree planting and dedication at Vinson Hall Retirement Community. Students and residents worked together to create small container gardens in front of each building in the community. Later, we all gathered for a tree planting and dedication ceremony. It was a beautiful morning of cross-divisional and intergenerational connections!

The Middle School has celebrated the Lunar New Year in several ways these past few weeks. Most recently, fifth graders wound their way around campus to celebrate the Year of the Dragon with their annual Lunar New Year dragon parade.
