Grade Two Service Learning Connections
On Monday, second graders welcomed several guests from local assisted living facilities to learn how we can serve older adults in our communities. Representatives from Chesterbrook Residences and Sunrise McLean Village came to share about what assisted living provides and to share ways that our students can support and encourage residents in their facilities. Beginning in January, each class will make several visits to these facilities to make intergenerational connections as part of their service learning.

How much weight can aluminum foil boats float? That's what kindergarten scientists were challenged with solving this week. In science, students made little "boats" out of aluminum foil to explore how their size affects how much weight they carry and how this relates to the density of water.
Why does a heavy boat float while a small rock sinks? Our kindergarten scientists are beginning to learn about buoyancy. After making observations, they experimented and found their results were similar to their predictions!
With a dry and sunny start, our temperatures climbed steadily upwards of 55 degrees as meteorologist Bob Ryan delighted grades 1-6 at a special assembly yesterday morning. Mr. Ryan, a local legend and Potomac grandfather, shared wonderful memories and notable occurrences from over 30 years of reporting on weather in our nation's capital.
Ms. Potter's second grade class completed our first series of Service Learning visits to local assisted living facilities in the community. Second graders have been learning about the needs of older adults, particularly those who need help with daily tasks in assisted living. Last Wednesday, Ms. Potter's second graders visited Culpepper Garden, where they played winter BINGO and completed coloring pages with several residents. They also met the president of Culpepper Garden, Marta Gray, who shared about life at Culpepper Garden and the needs of older adults. We are grateful for the opportunity to create cross-generational connections and look forward to visiting our new friends again soon!
