Intermediate School MSA Hosts Ramadan Fair

In a vibrant display of community learning, members of the Muslim Student Alliance (MSA) recently hosted a Ramadan Fair for the Intermediate School. The event was designed to foster deep cultural awareness and highlight the shared values of empathy, charity, and discipline that underpin the holy month.

Through a series of interactive presentations, MSA students guided their peers through the essential pillars of the Ramadan experience, including:

  • The Significance of Fasting and Prayer: Exploring the spiritual focus and self-reflection central to the month.
  • The Qur'an: Discussing its history and its role as a guide during this sacred time.
  • Suhoor and Iftar: Explaining the daily rhythm of the pre-dawn and post-sunset meals.
  • Eid al-Fitr: A look at the joyous celebration that marks the conclusion of the fast.

The Ramadan Fair reinforced Potomac’s commitment to an inclusive environment where students learn from one another’s lived experiences, ultimately strengthening the bonds of our diverse community. View the gallery here.

Science Biome Project Presentations

Seventh graders will continue traveling the world (via the Commons) this week as they present their research on the biomes of the world. Students are sharing information about the people and cultures, environmental issues, and the climate, plants, and animals of their respective biomes. Many students have a personal connection to their research; ask your local seventh grader for more details!

Celebrating Black History Month

This February marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Black History Month, a significant milestone that invites our Intermediate School (IS) community to reflect and deepen our collective understanding of Black history. To mark this centennial, students participated in a special assembly led by the Black Student Alliance (BSA). They heard stories and reflections directly from their classmates. The school viewed this 100-year tradition not just as a look back, but as a vital opportunity to continue growing in empathy and awareness. Parents are encouraged to continue these conversations at home, helping students transform these reflections into a lifelong commitment to understanding, honoring, and carrying forward the legacy and impact of Black experiences in our shared history.

A Trip Down the Rabbit Hole: IS Students Bring Alice in Wonderland Jr. to Life

The Intermediate School recently took us through the looking glass for a spectacular production of Alice in Wonderland Jr. Performed this past Friday and Saturday, the musical brought Lewis Carroll’s whimsical world to life with vibrant energy and remarkable talent.

From the curious Alice to the frantic White Rabbit and the formidable Queen of Hearts, the dedicated cast delivered performances that were magical. At the same time, the Upper School crew kept the show running smoothly. We extend our deepest gratitude to the creative team who guided our students through this wonderland:

  • Director Ms. Blake Green for her vision and leadership.
  • Assistant Director Ms. Mia Fisher-Phillips for her dedication to the ensemble.
  • Musical Director Mr. Josh Harrington for bringing the curious melodies to life.

It was a joy to see our IS students embrace the muchness of these characters and share their hard work with the Potomac community. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this production an unbirthday to remember! Enjoy the livestream recording from Friday, January 30, along with the photo gallery.

IS Shark Tank

This week in eighth grade history, students stepped into the role of 1920s advertising teams, working to sell new inventions in a decade marked by booming business, emerging technologies, and a rapidly growing consumer culture. Their challenge was to convince wealthy investors to fund a new consumer product—something everyday Americans would want, need, and buy because of a persuasive advertising campaign.

Working in partners and small groups, students developed pitches for 1920s inventions such as the television, frozen food, and the electric washing machine. Then they presented their ideas to a panel of “sharks,” who decided whether to invest.
