Faculty Positions

Upper School English Teacher (Grades 9-12)

The Potomac School, a K-12 independent school in McLean, VA is seeking a full-time Upper School English teacher (grades 9-12) for the 2018-19 school year.

The ideal candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in English, master’s is preferred, and significant English teaching experience. The candidate should be an expert in teaching both American and British literature to grades 9-12. In addition, the candidate will support the Upper School English department with classroom teaching, curriculum development, and programming while supporting students in developing their critical reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The position also includes serving as a faculty advisor to a small group of students.

Full Time Intermediate and Upper School Chinese Teacher (Grades 7-12)

The Potomac School World Language Department is seeking a dynamic and talented full-time Chinese teacher and student advisor for 2018-2019. The ideal candidate has native fluency in Mandarin with fluent command of simplified Chinese characters and familiarity with the Better Chinese textbook series: Discovering Chinese Pro and Modern Chinese. Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, although a master’s degree is preferred. Candidates must also have at least two years’ experience teaching Mandarin Chinese to the students in grades 7-12.

In addition to being passionate about classroom teaching and curriculum development, the faculty member should enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues and be eager to establish meaningful relationships with students while supporting them in their development of Chinese language learning. Lesson development should include intercultural awareness and strengthening connections between Chinese and American culture.

Assistant Debate Coach

The Potomac School seeks an experienced assistant national circuit debate coach to join a rapidly growing and highly successful program in the Northern Virginia/District of Columbia area.

The position requires traveling with team members several times a month on weekends. The ideal candidate must be an experienced coach in Public Forum Debate and should have several years of coaching at the national circuit level and know argumentation well. The program is focused, but not limited to public address events such as Public Forum Debate, Worlds Schools Debate, Extemp Speaking and Oratory. Intermediate School Science Teacher (Grades 7-8)

The Potomac School, a K-12 independent school in McLean, VA, is seeking a full-time Intermediate School Science Teacher (Grades 7th & 8th) for the 2018-19 school year.

We are looking for a candidate with expertise and teaching experience that can help promote the intellectual curiosity of our students and develop specific scientific skills through an inquiry based curriculum. Candidates must be able to work collaboratively with colleagues using a variety of classroom approaches, including the innovative use of technology that emphasize critical thinking and individual research skills over rote memory. The position also includes serving as a faculty advisor to a small group of students.

The Potomac School requires a minimum of at least four years of prior classroom teaching experience at the Intermediate school level and encourages interest from candidates who are in the process of or have completed a relevant Master’s degree.

Manager of Campaigns and Major Gifts

The Potomac School, a K-12 private independent school in McLean, VA, seeks a Manager of Campaigns and Major gifts. This role is a full-time position and member of The Potomac School’s Advancement Office with responsibility for the overall management and day-to-day operations of the current comprehensive campaign through 2021, and subsequent major gifts initiatives identified by the School’s leadership thereafter. Reporting to the Director of Advancement and working in partnership with the campaign consultant and senior staff, the Manager ensures that all aspects of the campaign run smoothly and efficiently, including execution of the campaign operating plan, adherence to the campaign timetable, and achievement of the campaign goals.

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years’ experience in fundraising; experience working in a campaign environment preferred
  • Proficiency in data base management and moves management functionality
  • Excellent communications skills, including strong writing skills
  • Strong quantitative skills; experience creating donor reports and analysis preferred
  • Experience in prospect research with working knowledge of external databases and resources available for obtaining information
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and independently manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities while meeting deadlines
  • Exceptional verbal and interpersonal skills that foster positive relationships with diverse populations
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet and email and demonstrated ability to quickly learn various software programs
  • Strong organizational skills and unfailing attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in all aspects of work

Assistant Director of Annual Giving and Donor Relations

The Potomac School, a K-12 private independent school in McLean, VA, is currently seeking an Assistant Director of Annual Giving and Donor Relations. This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Annual Giving and the Director of Alumni Relations. This position is responsible for providing support and oversight to the day-to-day operations of both an effective, comprehensive annual giving program that raises over $2 million each year. The individual in this role will partner with staff and annual giving volunteers to develop and implement strategies and programs to identify, cultivate, and steward annual gifts from all constituencies, using personal solicitations, phone calls, direct mail, and electronic communication.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

The Potomac School, a K-12 independent school in McLean, VA, seeks a qualified candidate for the position of an Assistant Director of the Extended Day Program. This part-time position, reporting to the Director of the Extended Day Program, acts as a liaison between the parents, students and the staff members.

CDL - SCHOOL BUS DRIVER (Part-Time)

The Potomac School, a private independent K-12 School in McLean, VA is looking for a qualified bus driver. The ideal candidate will be responsible for driving morning and evening bus routes. This is a 10-month, split shift position that offers:
