Faculty Positions

DIRECTOR OF LEARNING SUPPORT (GRADES 7-12)

The Potomac School, a K-12 independent day school in McLean, VA, seeks experienced candidates for the Director of Learning Support (Grades 7-12) role. This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning. In this new position, the Director of Learning Support will collaborate with the leadership in furthering the learning support framework for the school. The director is responsible for leading the program in grades 7-12 and overseeing a team of two Learning Specialists. In addition to leading the program, this role will manage an Upper School caseload of his/her own, ensuring students receive the tools and support necessary to succeed.

An ideal candidate will be familiar with recent research and development in educating students with learning differences; have at least 5 years of prior experience in the field of learning support; hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher; have familiarity with neuropsychoeducational testing, individual academic plan processes, and reporting; maintain both a strong work ethic and a high level of integrity; have an understanding of independent schools.

DIRECTOR OF STUDENT LIFE (GRADES 9-12)

The Potomac School, a K-12 independent day school in McLean, VA, seeks experienced candidates for the Director of Student Life (Grades 9-12) role. This is a full-time, 12-month position, reporting to the Head of the Upper School. This position serves as a member of the Upper School Administrative team and has overall responsibility for student programs, the advisory program, the discipline system, clubs and activities, and school sponsored social gatherings. In addition, this role includes teaching one class.

Upper School Art Teacher (Grades 9-12)

The Potomac School is seeking a full-time Upper School Art Teacher and student advisor. We are looking for a candidate with expertise and teaching experience in art (9-12) to begin in August 2018.

The ideal candidate should have completed several years of relevant full-time teaching at the secondary school level and possess a bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree is also desirable. We are looking for experience teaching teenagers in, ideally, a full range of studio art media and methods including drawing, printmaking, painting, ceramics, and photography. Additionally, teaching candidates will themselves be practicing artists with a personal understanding of ideas and techniques and the confidence to demonstrate them in the studio, where appropriate, for their students. Some study of art history is also desirable.

We are looking for a candidate experienced in teaching various studio arts to Upper School students. Additionally, we are looking for a strong commitment to students, a positive, collaborative and collegial style, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. Assistant Debate Coach

The Potomac School seeks an experienced assistant national circuit debate coach to join a rapidly growing and highly successful program in the Northern Virginia/District of Columbia area.

The position requires traveling with team members several times a month on weekends. The ideal candidate must be an experienced coach in Public Forum Debate and should have several years of coaching at the national circuit level and know argumentation well. The program is focused, but not limited to public address events such as Public Forum Debate, Worlds Schools Debate, Extemp Speaking and Oratory. Intermediate and Upper School Chinese Teacher (Grades 7-12, Full-Time Position)

The Potomac School World Language Department is seeking a dynamic and talented full-time Chinese teacher and student advisor for 2018-2019. The ideal candidate has native fluency in Mandarin with fluent command of simplified Chinese characters and familiarity with the Better Chinese textbook series: Discovering Chinese Pro and Modern Chinese. Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, although a master’s degree is preferred. Candidates must also have at least two years’ experience teaching Mandarin Chinese to the students in grades 7-12.

In addition to being passionate about classroom teaching and curriculum development, the faculty member should enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues and be eager to establish meaningful relationships with students while supporting them in their development of Chinese language learning. Lesson development should include intercultural awareness and strengthening connections between Chinese and American culture.

Intermediate School English Teacher (Grades 7-8)

The Potomac School, a K-12 independent day school in McLean, VA, is seeking a full- time Intermediate School English Teacher (Grades 7th & 8th) for the 2018-19 school year.

We are looking for a candidate with expertise and teaching experience in writing and literature. The teacher would work closely with members of the English Department, developing curriculum and teaching strategies. Kindergarten Assistant Teacher - Part Time Position

Staff Positions

Manager of Campaigns and Major Gifts

The Potomac School, a K-12 private independent school in McLean, VA, seeks a Manager of Campaigns and Major gifts. This role is a full-time position and member of The Potomac School’s Advancement Office with responsibility for the overall management and day-to-day operations of the current comprehensive campaign through 2021, and subsequent major gifts initiatives identified by the School’s leadership thereafter. Reporting to the Director of Advancement and working in partnership with the campaign consultant and senior staff, the Manager ensures that all aspects of the campaign run smoothly and efficiently, including execution of the campaign operating plan, adherence to the campaign timetable, and achievement of the campaign goals.

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years’ experience in fundraising; experience working in a campaign environment preferred
  • Proficiency in data base management and moves management functionality
  • Excellent communications skills, including strong writing skills
  • Strong quantitative skills; experience creating donor reports and analysis preferred
  • Experience in prospect research with working knowledge of external databases and resources available for obtaining information

Assistant Director of Annual Giving and Donor Relations
