The parent community at Potomac also plays an integral role in service learning, helping develop service experiences that Potomac families can take part in together.
- Sandwich Day, Martha's Table and Cornerstones
For nearly 30 years, Potomac School has led a Sandwich Day tradition, making sandwiches for community members in need served by Martha's Table and more recently Cornerstones. Each month, K-12 students make sandwiches in each division and families contribute sandwiches made at home. Parent volunteers are integral partners to coordinate and deliver the donations to our community partners in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia. - Pack a Snack
Each December, the Parent Association Service Learning Committee organizes an annual “Pack a Snack” family service event to benefit the St. Lucy Food Project. Potomac families work together to assemble snack packs and write notes of encouragement to children in Northern Virginia, facing food insecurity. - Intergenerational Valentine's Day Event
This is another family service gathering hosted annually by the Parent Association Service Learning Committee at Vinson Hall Retirement Community, bringing together Potomac volunteers and older adults in our community. Participants create valentines for members of the military, including the sailors aboard the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman.
One of the main reasons we chose Potomac for our children was for its focus on developing the whole child, to include service learning. Children need to know from a young age that they have an impact on others, can help people, and experience how good it feels.Leigh Mayrhofer, Parent

Power Packs
K-12 Potomac families created 500 Power Packs providing weekend meals for children served by Food for Others during the December Parent Association Service Learning Committee family service event.

Helping Ukraine
Potomac families packaged over 21,000 meals for families displaced from the crisis in Ukraine in April. In partnership with Outreach Meals and Convoy of Hope, the Parent Association Service Learning Committee and student leaders in Upper School Global Perspectives and Citizenship Program spearheaded the family service event in Spangler.
