Volunteering at Potomac
Potomac thrives, due in large part, to the amazing volunteer support we receive from parents, alumni, and friends. Some brief descriptions of the activities that volunteers are involved in are listed below. If you are interested in volunteering please don't hesitate to call the volunteer coordinator, Susan Lewis, or the appropriate committee chair listed in the Handbook.
Opportunities
Annual Fund: Help with phonathons and letter writing for the Annual Fund each year. There are opportunities for alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff.
Archives: Help preserve and organize Potomac historic memorabilia and/or photos.
Book Fair: (March) Opportunities include book sorting, book selling, and committee planning.
Community Service: Collect sandwiches (7:45-8:15am) on one or more monthly Sandwich Days; drive sandwiches to Martha's Table (8-9am); help with after school projects; call agencies to research projects; donate art supplies for Middle School projects.
Parents' Diversity Committee: Participate in one of several subcommittees that promote diversity in the Potomac community.
Fall Frolics: All parents are contacted in the fall to work a shift at the October 22-23, 2004 Fall Frolics Auctions and Fair.
Fathers' Association (FAPS: Executive Committee, picnic 9/20, campout 10/4, skating, skiing, sports banquet 6/4, community service, culture/arts, environment, sports.
Fund raising: Annual Giving phonathons, capital campaigns, and mailings.
Gardening: Keeping Potomac's gardens fresh and neat in the spring and fall; help organize spring campus clean up.
Grandparents' Day: (May) Serve as host/hostess
Hospitality: Assist at a number of school social events.
Library Volunteers: Assist weekly or bi-monthly in one of the three libraries.
Parent Peer Group: Facilitate a parent peer group meeting for grade(s) 3-12 (training provided).
PAWS (Parents Active With Students): Parents of Upper School students organize social and athletic events.
Upper School Student Resources: Provide information on May internships for seniors and/or summer jobs for U.S. students.
Career Counseling: Willing to be contacted by Potomac students or alumni interested in your professional field.
College: Share information about your school with students.
Parents are also involved in: School office mailings; Costume work (ironing, sewing, repairing), Carpentry skills, Selling second-hand uniforms for the Trading Post, Photography (such as Grandparents' Day), Word processing and data management, food preparation for appreciation luncheons or other events.
