Two hundred and twenty (220) tickets are on sale now. Any remaining tickets will be sold during the Silent Auction.

The winning ticket will be drawn at the beginning of the Live Auction. The winner will receive the Live Auction item selected when the ticket was purchased. That item will then be withdrawn from the Live Auction. You do not have to be present to win.

Please note that the purchase of a raffle ticket is not considered to be a tax-deductible charitable contribution.

Taxes may be due for the winner on the difference between the market value and the price of the raffle ticket. One-of-a-Kind Table Made from Potomac’s Beloved Gum Tree

Witness to time, ancestor, symbol, and friend, Potomac’s mighty Gum Tree stood for generations as a campus landmark. Ancient, elemental tides built this tree and formed its wood. Tides of sunlight, moonlight, storm and calm, spring rain and summer haze, autumn winds and sparkling winter skies all combined to make this mighty tree. Its broad and spreading crown showed that it started as a pasture tree, casting generous cooling shade first on grazing herds, then on Union troops and local farmers, and finally, beginning in 1951, on the Potomac School community. Thereafter, tides of laughter and music, spirited shouts and cheers, recitation, reading, discussion, and quiet contemplation also contributed to the fiber of the beloved tree.

By August 2015, Potomac’s great Gum Tree had leafed its last. With equal measures of sadness and respect, it was taken down and cut apart, and since then the school community has stewarded every grain of it: twigs and branches turned to woodchips on the campus trails; two mighty limbs used as a climbing structure for Lower Schoolers; and now, from its heartwood, dense, beautifully figured boards are becoming furniture under the hands of student artists. In these many ways, the Gum Tree goes on living and giving to the community that loved and loves it.

This table, the first of its kind, was crafted in a fall-semester Upper School architecture class by eight students: Will Gregory, Colin Lee, Natalie Martin, Simon McGraw, Lysander Miliaras, Marshall Riccardi, Erik Richardson, and Ben Steer, working with Art Department Chair Cort Morgan. The contemporary live-edge design allows the beautiful Gum Tree wood to speak for itself.
