Students took the frames of honey sealed with beeswax and scraped off the wax. The braver ones were delighted to chew on the wax and taste the delicious wildflower honey. The frames were then placed into the honey spinner and students took turns cranking the spinner and forcing the honey out of the comb. When the honey has flowed down to the bottom of the spinner it will be filtered three times and finally placed into honey jars.

Fairbanks Make Transformational Gift to Potomac

"This is a very special institution, one that blends academic excellence in education with an uncompromising sense of humanity," Rich Fairbank said in his address to the more than 600 parents, alumni, and friends of The Potomac School who gathered to dedicate the new Upper School on May 2nd. Potomac announced the remarkable gift of Rich and Chris Fairbank to The Campaign for Potomac's Future in the amount of $12 million to fully fund the construction of a new Lower School. President Clinton answered "interdependence" which he called both good and bad, and he said we should strive to achieve "integrated communities" where every individual had opportunity, responsibility, and a genuine sense of belonging. President Clinton challenged the students to start a Potomac NGO, where every year a student board would decide on a project. "You could do it, and I'd be glad to help you set it up," he said. Before the presentation in the Langstaff Auditorium, President Clinton met with the senior class. Answers: "China, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Iran . . ." The topic was immigration and was brought to immediate reality by four extraordinary panelists, all individuals from the Potomac community. Potomac staff member Bernie Montiel told of the horrors visited upon his family in Nicaragua during the Somoza regime. Amanda Shi, grade 11 student, spoke about her dual life in the U.S. and in China, and her experiences in the more stressful Chinese school environments. Potomac French teacher Dr. Kabahita, who has lived in America for 20 years and is a U.S. citizen, spoke about the mismanagement of his home country Congo under 32 years of the dictator Mobutu and during the last ten years of the country's civil war. And Farah Ebrahimi, aunt of Potomac student Samee Gharagozloo, told of her amazing escape from revolutionary Iran during the early days of the Islamic Republic. Sesno asked the panelists why they decided to leave their home country and why they chose the United States. All four said freedom of speech and choice, education, and prosperity. Their powerful stories provided a personal perspective on the immigration issue and a reminder to the audience that we are all immigrants with stories of our own.

The Tyranny of Cool: The New Reality of Raising Your 21st Century Kids

The Tyranny of Cool: The New Reality of Raising Your 21 st Century Kids was the subject of the Dewey Lecture Series presentation by renowned author and child and family therapist Dr. Ron Taffel, November 6, 2006. Some interesting topics included the role of understanding individual student temperaments, the role of praise, and teachers as the replacement for old-style, small- town communities. Sponsored by the Potomac Education Resource Coalition (PERC), a unique partnership of faculty and parents, the lecture series also included two parent book talks to discuss and share insights gleaned from two of Dr. Taffel's books. For over 25 years, Dr. Taffel has worked with children and families, helping parents try to connect with their children. Author of Parenting by Heart, Why Parents Disagree, Nurturing Good Children Now, and The Second Family, he is known as one of the most practical child-rearing experts. The new facility enables us to increase enrollment (we added 25 additional students this year), enrich the curriculum, and enhance our connection to the natural environment. As evidenced at this morning's assembly, the new facility also strengthens our commitment to a cohesive, interconnected K-12 learning environment. The new Upper School was designed and renovated to be environmentally-sound and sustainable, energy efficient, and high performance. Our green buildings strengthen a school-wide focus on environmental stewardship that includes a well-established recycling program and a comprehensive bus transportation system that includes 30 buses running on biodiesel, reducing the number of cars commuting to our campus and serious air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter.

Bookstore open for Business

Upper School students may purchase their school books at the Bookstore, temporarily located on the stage of the Preston Gym (across from the Headmaster's office). Click Read More for Bookstore Hours.

Potomac Teachers and Students Travel and Learn
