Middle School Curriculum

Grades 4-6

Potomac sees Middle School as a place for experiencing both the joys of childhood and the exciting prospect of growing up.

Children develop through the Middle School years, grades 4-6, from the mastery of basic skills to the integration of ideas. By grade 6 students become sophisticated thinkers.

Children thrive in small classes; 4 at each grade level. Twice a week students congregate for assemblies, with parents invited to attend on Fridays. The school day begins at 8:10 and ends at 3:15 as students say goodbye with a handshake.

Students study math, language arts, and social studies with their classroom teacher. Learning is enriched several times a week with special programs in library, science, art, music, physical education, and computer. In all classes, teachers build on the concepts of cooperative and imaginative learning.

A primary goal of this division is to develop critical thinkers, skilled readers and writers. Homework ranges from thirty minutes to one and a half hours, depending on grade level, in addition to daily independent reading.

Teachers meet with parents twice a year and provide progress reports on each child’s growth.
