  • Laura Amy Schlitz, Newbery Author, Visiting Potomac School

    Posted May 1

We are honored to host the 2008 Newbery Award winner Laura Amy Schlitz on Friday, May 16th. Schlitz created Good Masters, Sweet Ladies: Voices From a Medieval Village as a performance piece to supplement the fifth grade study of the Middle Ages at the Park School in Baltimore. After being rejected by numerous publishing houses, this unique project found a publisher and critical acclaim as the unexpected recipient of the most recent Newbery Award. While we are overjoyed to present this author to our students, don’t forget that amazing authors visit the D.C. area nearly every week. Take a look at the calendar of events in the Post Book Review section or call your local bookstore to learn about free programs.

  • African-American History and Historical Fiction to Enjoy

    Posted May 1

Many a commentator has noted that Black History Month falls in February, the shortest and coldest month. The choice of February is not, however, the cynical choice of a begrudging majority. History tells us that Dr. Carter Woodson created the first Negro History Week in 1926. The second week of February was specifically chosen because it included the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, the great abolitionist, and Abraham Lincoln, the great emancipator. Many wonderful books published in recent years bring black history to life.

  • Good "Hear" for the Holidays

    Posted December 7

With long trips in cars and potential delays at airports a reality for travelers this holiday season, it’s worth considering audio books as a way to leave mile 127 of the Jersey Turnpike behind and enter the magical worlds of Narnia or Hogwarts. Nearly every story you can imagine is available in an audio format for you to listen to as you sit on the tarmac or pull into the Joyce Kilmer rest stop.

Looking for a gift that’s easy to ship, comes completely assembled, and hardly ever breaks. Try buying a book for that special someone in your family. Many news organizations have just published Best of the Year lists including the New York Times and Publishers’ Weekly. For lists of only children’s books try Kirkus Reviews and the ALA. Kirkus also produced a list of the best young adult books for the first time this year.

  • A Reading Community

    Posted December 7

As a new father, I often ask myself what steps I should take to make sure that my son becomes a reader. Already at two years old, the lure of the computer and the siren song of the television are proving irresistible. Most of us think about these questions when our children are younger, but forget about them by the time a student has reached the Middle School. And yet many of the same techniques we use to involve younger children are appropriate to older children and help create an environment where reading is valued and enjoyed.

  • Where to Find a Good Book

    Posted December 7

Several times a day in the library we hear a variation on the same question: “Where can I find a good book?” Obviously, the librarians are a fine source and we are eager to help, but we find that students often respect the recommendations of their peers the most. For this reason, we have added a category called STUDENT FAVORITES to our website. Recommendations are divided by grade and by genre, and each one has a brief description and a picture of the book’s cover. Check these out at http://www.potomacschool.org/campus_life/arundel_reading.asp. There are some wonderful titles, both old and new.

  • Wikipedia

There is no question that the way your child does research is world’s apart from the techniques of our childhood. Most students use Google and then accept those results without questioning the credibility of sources. High atop those results is often a Wikipedia entry.

What's New

Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer

Now that Harry Potter’s epic has concluded, Stephenie Meyer bring us the Twilight  series for older, Intermediate School teen readers.  The third title, Eclipse, has just been released.  Instead of Harry, now we have Bella Swan, recently moved from the sunny Southwest to the misty, rainy Pacific Northwest, in a series that is both romantic and suspenseful.

Arundel Book Wish List

The school's librarians maintain a "wish list" of books to add to the collections of all three libraries. Anyone can donate books from the wish list and the books are placed into circulation immediately, with a dedication bookplate of the donor's choosing. The wish list on this website is updated frequently.
