Part-Time 75% Associate Director of Bands (Grade 5-12)

The Potomac School is seeking a part-time 75% Associate Director of Bands to begin in August 2017. We are looking for a candidate with the ability to conduct concert bands within the three divisions.

The ideal candidate should have experience in teaching brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments from beginner to advanced level, with particular emphasis in woodwinds. The candidate is expected to teach beginner woodwinds at the 5th and 6th grade level.

Candidates should have at least two years of classroom teaching experience and possess a bachelor’s degree in music or music education; a Master’s degree is preferred.

Substitute Upper School English Teacher

The Potomac School Upper School English Department is seeking a full-time Substitute English Teacher available from August 28 - November 17. The ideal candidate has expertise teaching literature and writing to grades 9 to 12.

Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in English, master’s degree preferred, and English teaching experience. The faculty member will teach one elective of Fiction Writing and three sections of literature, in which he or she will be guiding students in the development of their critical reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT TO THE HEAD OF THE UPPER SCHOOL

The Potomac School, a K-12 independent day school in McLean, VA, seeks an Administrative Assistant to the Head of the Upper School. This full-time position requires a highly energetic candidate who truly enjoys the school environment, is able to foster a climate of warmth and is welcoming to students, parents and faculty. The Potomac School seeks a Substitute Intermediate School Spanish Teacher from September 2017 – November 2017. The ideal candidate should be able to immerse students in the patterns of the language through conversation and writing rather than common language proficiency techniques. The teacher will work closely with both members of the World Language Department and grade level teams in the use of a variety of classroom approaches, including the use of technology.

Working under the mentorship of experienced teachers, interns participate fully in the life of the school, from instructional practices to collaborative work and extracurricular activities. Applicants should achieve enrollment in a graduate degree program in elementary education or reading instruction at either Marymount University or the University of Virginia. The internship program is designed to integrate theory and methods learned in coursework with effective classroom practice.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working four days per week (full day) in a Potomac classroom alongside a mentor teacher
  • Collaborating with mentor teachers to plan and implement small and large group lessons
  • Developing skills for differentiating instruction for a range of learners
  • Participating in long and short range planning, student assessment, and curricular conversations

Lower School

Lower School Mathematics Coordinator

The Potomac School is seeking a full-time Lower School Mathematics Coordinator for its Mathematics Program for the 2017-18 school year. The Math Coordinator will work with kindergarten and first grade grade level teams to plan and implement mathematics instruction within a coherent K – 12 construct.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • modeling best practices in mathematics instruction within classroom settings
  • coaching teachers in building their mathematical skills sets
  • identifying and monitoring individual math needs of students
  • working with classroom teachers and students to provide differentiated instruction for a range of learners
  • facilitating weekly grade level math meetings to guide discussion about implementation, reflection of student work, various teaching methods
  • providing materials that enhance and support the mathematics curriculum
  • coordinating ongoing professional development and/or training for faculty
  • implementing parent education for Potomac families

The ideal candidate should have at least three years of full-time teaching experience, and a Master’s Degree is preferred. A background in Math in Focus, our math curriculum, would be a distinct asset. Payroll and Finance Associate

The Potomac School, a K-12 private independent school in McLean, VA, is currently seeking a full-time Payroll and Finance Associate to oversee payroll for approximately 325 employees. This position is a member of the HR team and works closely with the finance group. In addition to performing a variety of payroll related tasks, this role will also provide analytical support to the CFO/COO. The ideal candidate must be organized with strong attention to detail.
